This week, parshat Tzav, is another list of sacrifices. Leann pointed out that many of the sacrifices are introduced with the same words, “This is the torah of…” She asked us to think about what OUR torah is. What are the things we do with a specific order? We have an order of brushing our teeth, a morning ritual for getting everyone out of the house, and a specific way of making our beds.
Maybe it is because Pesach is quickly approaching, but when I read these words earlier in the week, “This is the offering that Aaron and his sons shall offer to GOD on the occasion of his anointment: a tenth of an ephah of choice flour as a regular grain offering, half of it in the morning and half of it in the evening, shall be prepared with oil on a griddle. You shall bring it well soaked, and offer it as a grain offering of baked slices, of pleasing odor to GOD.” and all I could think of was pancakes.
What is the Torah of making pancakes? Well, for sure there is a recipe, but it is more than that, it is a food that we all enjoy. No matter how tired everyone is, the call of pancakes for breakfast will get everyone out of bed. Everyone chooses their own toppings and everyone is happy. I guess you could probably find a good metaphor for Torah in that, but mostly I’d like to think that God would enjoy the smells that come out of our kitchen when pancakes are on the griddle.
